You can’t beat the hot days of summer. The sun is shining; the kids are beating the heat running through a sprinkler and eating freezies. The flowers are in full bloom; vegetable gardens are growing at rapid rates but, the lawn, however, is a nice, hay-like consistency. Properties without irrigation are most likely going to see the grass dry out rather quickly. Even properties with irrigation systems may experience a City/Region water ban and have to turn off their irrigation systems. So…what do we do when we arrive to site to find the grass dried out? We leave it. To cut the grass when it’s dry will do more harm to the lawn and its longevity than cutting it.
What happens next is the rain comes pouring down in massive amounts periodically for days. It’s great because it cools everything down and gives your gardens and lawns the drink it needs turning the grass the lush green everyone loves. Except now that dormant hay like substance has grown a foot in that time frame and now it’s soaking wet. What do we do? We may have to leave it. That’s right – Cutting a site when it’s too wet can damage the grass and compact the soil which doesn’t allow for optimum growth. Not too mention, depending on the property the machines can slip and cause serious damage to the turf and to the operator. It’s a fine balance managing a lawn of a site.
It’s not only about when to cut it’s how much to cut; too low can cause favourable conditions for disease and weeds. Ideally you never want to remove 1/3 of the surface at a any one mowing. Managing all of this can be a huge undertaking for any commercial/industrial or multi-residential site manager. Good new is Superb Property Maintenance can help.
