The dreaded dandelions! They invade your lawn – selfishly taking the much needed sunlight, water and nutrients for themselves causing the lawn to become weak and susceptible to pests and disease.
We’ve seen it/heard it soooooo many times – we show up to a site that’s over run with dandelions and the residents are angry because the property looks unsightly and they are seeing a decline in the property value – yes, those wretched weeds can decrease your property values and make the property undesirable!! Think about it…a perspective purchaser pulls into a property to see it covered in dandelions and patches of dirt where the grass should be. They go down the street to see another property and they see a lush, green, healthy lawn…where are they most likely to purchase? The unfortunate part is it’s not an easy fix. It’s not a quick “spray it” and the weeds are gone. In Ontario, we are not permitted to use certain types of weed control so the instant results of years ago are long gone. It takes time and, I’m sorry to say Mr. & Mrs. Frugal, it takes money. Here’s the thing, once those dastardly dandelions have established and taken over, it will cost more money to get rid of them then to make sure they never get there.
Here at Superb, we recommend a preventative approach – a yearly plan to prevent the weeds from even wanting to take refuge in your grass.
The plan is easy – twice a year (spring and fall) aerate, seed, fertilize and weed control the lawn. This regiment will increase the lawn’s ability to ward off those invasive broadleaf weeds and develop a lush, thick, green lawn. The caveat is – this process needs to continue – even when your lawn is lush and green. You may be able to scale the process down to once a year (spring or fall) but if you cut it out completely, even one season, it can have an adverse effect and those lovely yellow flowers will bloom again.
