Fence Sense (and cents)

As you know, a fence can improve your home’s curb appeal, provide security, increase privacy, and offer protection from the elements.

Did you know in July 2020, producer prices for softwood lumber increased 22% from the previous month? At that point, demand for lumber had begun trending upwards, mostly driven by new residential construction and an increase in home improvement. (yep –  we can blame COVID for this too).

Good news is Lumber prices dropped sharply in 2022; Bad news is lumber prices continue to remain at above high averages. That’s because of higher production costs, dealers have to rebuild inventory and labour constraints continue to impede production. Business guru’s are predicting we won’t see improvement on the lumber costs/deliver delays for at least another 2-3 years. Ouch!

Sure –  you (the DIY’er) – can try and build/repair/replace the fence on your own.

No disrespect to the DIY’er but building/repairing or replacing a fence is time consuming and not as easy as one might think.

There are a few things to consider before even starting. Do your neighbours want to go in with you? Who is going help build the fence and dig out the holes for the posts? Do you need a permit – it depends…do you have a hot tub or pool? Do you know the max height the fence can be? Are there restrictions on how far from the home the fence can be installed? Will it impede, obstruct or alter water flow?…and the list goes on and on…Wait there’s more, there is the expense of it all…as we said lumber itself can be costly but then you have to dig/cement the holes; purchase the hardware; figure out the square feet and we can keep going….is all of this giving you a headache yet?

Let’s be honest – Do you really want to take a chance and have an amateur build your fence in hopes it will be done correctly? Wouldn’t it make more sense to hire a professional?
